STA. RITA — The Kapampangan film “Manenaya” (Waiting) won the Jury Prize Award in the short film category of the recently concluded 8th Cinemalaya Independent Film Festival 2012 awards night.
The awards night was held at the Tanghalang Nicanor Abelardo at the Cultural Center of the Philippines (CCP) last Sunday night.
The film was shown last July 28 to 29 at the CCP and selected cinemas in Trinoma and Greenbelt, along with other films in the full-length new breed category, the director’s showcase category and the short films category.
Ruston Banal, a member of the film’s production, said the recognition highlights that Kapampangan films, shot and filmed with Kapampangan cultural background and influences, can actually catch the attention of movie critics.
“This recognition brings into the light the fact that Kapampangan filmmaking has a future in the national cinematic scene,” Banal told Sun.Star Pampanga.
The film “Manenaya,” co-produced and filmed by director Richard Soriano Legaspi, made it to the ranks of finalists in the Jogja-Netpac Asian Film Festival (JAFF) in Indonesia last year.
“Manenaya” is a story of a determined woman, and her journey through life under the backdrop of the various landscapes of Pampanga. She brings with her a wooden casket for her husband, a victim of political killings.
The film is a journey in search for truth and personal triumph through the challenges of life.
The film stars Teatru Ima at Arti member Agnes Romero, who was personally chosen by the director after her excellent performances for the theater group’s recent musicals in Pampanga and at the CCP.
Other actors include Beth Masangkay and Bor Ocampo of the Film Academy of Pampanga. The cinematography for the film was done by Ruston Banal. The film is co-produced by Rona Manalac.
Legaspi, the director, is a Fine Arts major who studied advertising at the University of the East. He also graduated at the prestigious Asian Film Academy of Busan International Film Festival in South Korea.
